Article summary

To discover virtual machines on the network, you must first manually add at least one virtual machine type.

Follow these steps:

  1.  Open your browser, navigate to Nodegrid, and log in as the admin user.

  2.  Go to Managed Devices :: Auto Discovery :: Network Scan and click on the Add button.

  3. Configure the Scan: Enter a Scan ID and specify the IP range (start and end).

  4. You have three options for discovering your KVM devices:

    1. Similar Devices: Choose a console server device you've already added to Nodegrid.

    2. Port Scan: Enter a list of ports in the Port List field.

    3. Ping: Enable or disable as needed. Optionally, adjust the scan interval or leave it at the default of 60 minutes.

  5. Click Save to save your settings.

Note: Similar Devices  refers to devices with identical credentials.

  6. Create Discovery Rules:

    1. Go to Managed Devices :: Auto Discovery :: Discovery Rules, click Add, and follow these steps to discover and add virtual machines:

      1. Enter a name for the rule.

      2. Under Discovery Method, select VM Manager

      3. In the Datacenter, Cluster, and Host VM Identifier fields, provide a substring to identify the relevant datacenter, cluster, or virtual machine names for this configuration. Leave these fields blank to allow any virtual machine to match the configuration.

      4. In the Action field, select Clone (Mode: Enabled).

      5. For Clone From, select the virtual machine name you previously added manually, then click Save.

  7. Discover VMWare Virtual Ports (Optional):

    1. If you want to discover and add VMWare Virtual Ports to Nodegrid Managed Devices, follow these steps:

      1. Enter a name for the rule.

      2. Under Discovery Method, select VM Serial.

      3. In the Host or VM Identifier field, provide a substring to identify the virtual machine names for this configuration. You can also enter the Port URI information configured under the VM serial port in the ESXi server. This can be used for group names or identifiers. Leave the fields blank to allow any virtual machine to match the configuration.

      4. In the Action field, select Clone (Mode: Enabled).

      5. For Clone From, select the virtual machine name you previously added manually, then click Save.

  8. Nodegrid Manager is now set up with basic information and is ready to discover Virtual Machines and/or VMWare Virtual Ports, and to manage users and connections. You can wait for the Scan Interval to pass, or manually initiate the discovery by clicking the Discover Now tab, selecting the VM Scan ID, and clicking the Discover Now button.
